Williamsburg, Va, 11 June 2020: Senate Republican Leader Thomas K. Norment, Jr. (R-James City), Caucus Chairman Ryan T. McDougle (R-Hanover), Caucus Co-Chairman Mark D. Obenshain (R-Rockingham), Caucus Whips William M. Stanley, Jr. (R-Franklin) and Bryce E. Reeves (R-Spotsylvania), and Republican Leader Pro-Tempore Stephen D. Newman (R-Bedford) today issued the following statement in response to Governor Northam’s announcement of support for the effort to “Defund the Police”:

“Today, Governor Northam embraced the extremist agenda to ‘Defund the Police.’  His attempt to rebrand this reckless proposal as how Virginia would ‘best prioritize the funding’ does not conceal the reality of his intentions.  Today, he effectively endorsed reducing funding for law enforcement.

“Recently, the Governor has shown a disregard for enforcing current statutes, allowing active rioting and the destruction of public and private property.

“We will vigorously and vociferously oppose any and all efforts to reduce funding to our hard-working law enforcement professionals.  Public safety is a core function of government.  Our State Troopers, Sheriff’s Deputies, Police Officers, and Capitol Police put their lives on the line every day to keep our streets and neighborhoods safe.  They deserve the support of every Virginian and they definitely have ours.”
