RICHMOND, VA, 27 JUNE 2011: The Virginia Senate Republican Caucus is off to a strong start in its race to win a Republican majority in the Senate. Republican candidates have already been selected in 24 of Virginia’s 40 Senatorial Districts, nearly two months before the August 23 deadline for parties to select nominees for the November 8 General Election.
“We are ideally positioned to become the majority party in the Senate of Virginia, and our success in recruiting strong candidates across the Commonwealth confirms we have the momentum to win in November,” remarked Senate Minority Leader Thomas K. Norment, Jr. (R-James City). “Our nominees and candidates are ready for this election.”
Current Republican Senators are particularly well positioned for the November contests. Of the 16 members of the Virginia Senate Republican Caucus seeking reelection this November, 15 have already secured the Republican nomination.
Republican candidates who are challenging Democrat incumbents or running in open seats have secured the Republican nomination in nine Districts.
Of the 24 Republican candidates who have already been chosen as the Party’s nominees in November, 22 were the sole candidates to successfully file for the primary in their respective districts.
In seven districts, the Republican nominee will be chosen in the August 23 Primary. Nominees in the remaining nine districts will be selected by a party-run nomination process. With nearly two months remaining before the August 23 deadline, Republicans have nominees declared or candidates announced in 35 of Virginia’s 40 Senate districts.
