As Republicans across the country celebrated great victories on November 2, one of our own Senators, Robert Hurt (Pittsylvania) was among their ranks.  Robert won a major contest in which he defeated Democratic incumbent Congressman Tom Perriello to become the new Representative for the 5th Congressional District.  While we will miss Robert’s great contributions in the Senate, we congratulate him on his victory and wish him well as he begins a new chapter in his career of public service.

When Senators vacate their seats, special elections are held to elect their successors.  In the 19th Senatorial District, there will be a special election on January 11, 2011.  The Senate Republican Caucus is thrilled to support Bill Stanley for Senate.

Bill Stanley won a competitive firehouse primary on November 23 to become the Republican nominee.  In nominating Bill Stanley, local Republicans chose a strong conservative who has spent years in the trenches in Republican politics.  The son of a naval aviator, Bill’s family settled in Franklin County in 1983.  After graduating from Hampden-Sydney College and the D.C. School of Law, Stanley returned to Franklin County to practice law.  In 2008, he became the Franklin County Republican Chairman.  In 2010, he became the 5th District Republican Chairman and worked to enact the district-wide grassroots effort that was responsible for electing Robert Hurt to Congress.

Senator Tommy Norment (James City), the Senate Republican Leader, said, “Bill Stanley is a great choice to be our nominee in this important Special Election, and he’ll make a fantastic Senator.  Today, Republican voters in Campbell, Danville, Franklin, and Pittsylvania had a large and talented field from which to choose their next Senator, and they have selected a great nominee who will represent the voters of the 19th District with distinction in the Senate of Virginia.”

Senator Steve Newman (Bedford), the Chairman of the Senate Republican Caucus, said, “In the Senate of Virginia, Bill Stanley will be a strong conservative voice for the people of the 19th District.  He ran an outstanding campaign for the Republican nomination, standing out in a crowded field.  I know the entire Senate Republican Caucus is excited about his candidacy, and we are all looking forward to welcoming him to the Senate after his next victory in the January 11 Special Election.”

In thanking his supporters after his victory, Bill Stanley said, “Going forward, I will be working extremely hard until the January 11 Special Election to keep this seat in strong, conservative hands, and follow the example of service set by Congressman-Elect Robert Hurt.”

The Senate Republican Caucus looks forward to having Bill Stanley join our ranks in January.  In the meantime, we will do everything it takes to ensure he is elected and encourage you to do the same.  Please visit his website at http://billstanleyforsenate.com to find out how you can be involved or make a donation to his campaign.
