RICHMOND, VA, 2 FEBRUARY 2019: Senate Majority Leader Thomas K. Norment, Jr. (R-James City), Senate Republican Caucus Chairman Ryan T. McDougle (R-Hanover), and Senate Republican Caucus Co-Chairman Mark D. Obenshain (R-Rockingham) today issued the following statement:
“In a government of laws dependent upon the voices and votes of the people being respected, the highest possible threshold must be met before calling on any duly elected public official to resign.
“The events of this week have convinced us, with sadness and disappointment, that threshold has been met.
“The confidence of the people is essential to a governor being able to serve effectively. It is clear to us that Governor Northam no longer holds that confidence.
“As a physician, community leader, senator, lieutenant governor, and governor, Ralph Northam has worked to serve the Commonwealth and its citizens. For that, he deserves the thanks of all Virginians. Now, however, the time has come for him to fulfill his duty and act in the best interests of Virginia by stepping down.”
