WILLIAMSBURG, VA, 21 MARCH 2018: Senate Majority Leader Thomas K. Norment, Jr. (R-James City), Co-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, today issued the following statement regarding Governor Northam’s reintroduced budget proposal:
“Governor Northam’s decision to effectively reintroduce Governor McAuliffe’s budget is an essential step in beginning the process of resolving the current budget impasse. That he continues to make Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion integral to that budget, and his refusal to base his plan on a more current revenue forecast, means the current standoff cannot be resolved quickly.
“The Secretary of Finance informed the Senate Finance Committee that, because of the federal tax reform, we won't have a comprehensive revenue picture until May. We must have a full revenue re-forecast from Secretary Layne to ensure we craft a fiscally responsible budget with sustainable revenues.
“It is our hope that the budget approved by House Appropriations during this special session will not include Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion. Absent a budget re-forecast, a decision by the House to adopt a clean budget could resolve the impasse quickly.”
